A joint Indian and Swedish initiative.
The partners behind Retainergy all have solid competence in waste management and incineration, and are well connected with the key players in the sector – in India and in Europe.
To support the healthcare sector in India to sustainably use energy resources that are currently wasted when medical waste is incinerated.
To develop a commercially viable solution for retaining the energy generated in the incineration process.
By installing technologies that recover the energy in the flue gases, it becomes possible to generate heat and cooling – and potentially power – creating new sources of revenue for operators of waste incineration installations.
Test first, then scale.
The network includes technology suppliers, engineering companies, operators, universities, public institutions and research institutes.
Bed test in Delhi
The solution will be applied and tested in a waste incineration facility currently in operation in Delhi. If it meets the technical, regulatory and commercial requirements, it will be deployed in similar installations in India and, at a later stage, in neighbouring countries.
The project will also feed information into national policymaking on hospital waste management in India. A public feedback round every six years (open in 2024) ensures that best available technologies are identified and mandated.
Scaling up
Retaining redundant energy from incineration processes brings direct and indirect benefits:
- CommercialNew revenue streams for operators
- EnvironmentalLocal, regional and global
- Socio-economicFor the healthcare sector and the city
- TrainingNew skills and new jobs

Help build the next installations.
We welcome industry partners at an early stage, to make heat recovery from incineration affordable, standardised and easy to retrofit.
