Heat that is cooled off and released – every day.
The overall mission of Retainergy is to develop an affordable and scalable solution for capturing redundant energy from waste incineration and transforming it into useful heating, cooling and, potentially, power.
The problem
Hospitals in India generate large amounts of toxic medical waste that must be incinerated according to regulatory standards. The incineration process releases a significant amount of waste heat into the atmosphere.
Conventionally, this heat is only partially recovered as steam for sterilisation. The remainder is first cooled off by a gas-fired unit and then emitted to the ambient air – further aggravating the urban heat island effect.
Retainergy aims to change that by generating additional revenues for operators while providing a range of environmental and socio-economic benefits.

A testbed in Delhi.
The initiative is funded by the governments of India and Sweden and aims to identify solutions for retaining the waste heat and transforming it into heating, cooling and power.
Pilot initiated
Designing and implementing a testbed solution in a medical waste incineration facility in Delhi, operated by Biotic.
A platform for roll-out
The experience from Delhi will form the basis for similar installations in India – and, at a later stage, in other industry sectors and neighbouring markets.
An estimated 250 units
The potential in India's medical waste sector alone is estimated at 250 units.

From one plant to a sector.
A market research exercise is underway, with the aim of making a detailed analysis of the market opportunities in the medical waste sector in India. At a later stage, a market study will look at the broader opportunities for similar solutions in India and in neighbouring countries.
Help build the next installations.
We welcome industry partners at an early stage, to make heat recovery from incineration affordable, standardised and easy to retrofit.
